Deregistration is generally straightforward for the majority of people. Legally, the school is obliged to remove your child/ren’s name on receipt of the letter and not wait for permission from the local authority (Northamptonshire County Council). Parents do not need to separately notify the local authority – this is the duty of the school.
Sample deregistration letter:

Dear [name of headteacher],
[full name of child and their date of birth]
I am writing to inform you that I/we have decided to withdraw our son/daughter from school in order to take personal responsibility for his/her education.
Therefore, please delete his/her name from the register in accordance with Education (Pupil Registration) Regulation 8 (1) (d) 2006, as he/she is now receiving education otherwise than at school.
Please confirm in writing that my child/ren have been deleted from the school register.
Yours sincerely
